Your treatment provides life-changing eye care for someone in need.
As a participating practice in the HCP Global Partners program, your surgeon will sponsor one sight-restoring cataract surgery in an under-resourced country in partnership with HCP Cureblindness.
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, accounting for more than 18 million needlessly blind people. While most global health challenges cannot be easily cured, cataract blindness is a striking exception. Cataract blindness can be cured with a 10 minute procedure, for as little as $25 per eye. This is why the World Bank has called cataract surgery “one of the most cost-effective public health interventions available.”
The Facts
Life expectancy for the blind is only one-third of that for age-matched peers
90% of blind individuals can no longer work
50% report loss of social standing and decision-making authority
What is the HCP Global Partners program?
The HCP Global Partners program empowers organizations to make an impact on those suffering from cataract blindness by donating a set dollar amount or percentage of a particular surgery/ies to HCP Cureblindess. Donations made through the HCP Global Partners program provide lifechanging eye care for those suffering from blindness
What is HCP Cureblindness?
Founded over 25 years ago, HCP Cureblindness (HCP) is a non-profit focused on eradicating needless cataract blindness with an emphasis on reaching patients considered “unreachable.” HCP targets remote, underresourced areas where the burden of blindness is extremely high, and has improved eye care in more than 20 countries throughout South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
How common is cataract blindness?
Globally, 36 million people are blind from cataracts, yet 80% of this burden is treatable or preventable. Blindness is a leading cause of world poverty, robbing communities of laborers, denying children education, and causing an estimated $49BN in lost productivity for low/moderate income countries every year. Cataract blindness has a disproportionate impact on women, who account for over 60% of the world’s blind.
